Conference at Swansea University
By Janet Cochrane
18th November, 2009

Chairing a conference panel at Swansea University

In mid-September Janet chaired a panel at the annual conference of the Association of South East Asian Scholars UK on 'Resilience in Tourism'. There were some excellent presentations, including:

  • the surge in tourism development in Siem Reap , Cambodia , and the challenges for urban planning
  • a vulnerability assessment of tourism in Thailand after the 2004 Asian tsunami
  • the role of agri-ecotourism in reducing unemployment in West Java, Indonesia
  • World Heritage Site research in Thailand and Indonesia presented by four people. Some common themes were that sites often have complex ownership and management systems involving different authorities, and that interpretative facilities are often aimed at international audiences, despite the importance of domestic tourism.

The sessions were well attended with some useful discussions. Please contact Janet for more information on the presentations.
