"When I first chose to study the MSc RTM, the part-time distance learning approach was one of the main factors influencing my decision but I soon realised that it's the industry relevance and cutting edge subject matter which sets the course apart from other programmes of study. When I first started studying the course I was a Travel Consultant - not long after I was offered a job as Product Executive for The Adventure Company and shortly after that also appointed as Responsible Tourism Coordinator.
I was told that it was my knowledge of and interest in RT that held me in good stead at interview. I've recently been appointed as Sustainable Tourism Project Officer for the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority as my professional interests in tourism, conservation and rural development have grown as I've been studying. When I was offered the job, the Sustainable Tourism Manager mentioned that the value of my affiliation with the ICRT was something they held in high esteem and even before that, the alumni network played an invaluable role in helping me prepare for the interview with pointers on possible questions and responses.
In fact, the alumni network is one of the distinctive strengths of the ICRT - rather than just a 'paper' alumni network like that of other universities, the MSc seems like just the beginning of an ongoing mutually beneficial relationship. I've gone from Travel Consultant to Sustainable Tourism Project Officer in 2 years and I'm certain the MSc being renowned in the relevant circles has played a significant part in my success.
I also hope it serves to highlight that a lot is possible in a relatively short space of time - even before you graduate and whilst being a student! Coincidentally, I got the Brecon Beacons job just as I was studying the module in Tourism and Conservation in Protected Areas - now I can put in practice what I am learning!"
