Introduction

MastersStart studying this Septermber 2013 by applying now! The Masters programme in Responsible Tourism Management in the School of Events, Tourism and Hospitality at Leeds Metropolitan University primarily attracts mid-career professionals who often study the programme whilst continuing their careers in tourism, consultancy, government, conservation, IT, environmental management, law, marketing and a range of other careers. They share a commitment to the values of Responsible Tourism.

Watch Professor Harold Goodwin introduce Leeds Met’s MSc Responsible Tourism Management. This course draws from its staff’s work with industry, governments and communities worldwide. You will look at real issues and solutions and develop the management skills you need to operate effectively at a strategic level within government, non-governmental and private sectors. What makes our course different is our mentoring system – you take modules at your pace, and we support you in reflecting on the issues and challenges which confront you and the opportunities they present.

Entry requirements

Leedsmet prides itself on the outstanding quality of candidates, giving you bright and motivated colleagues to share knowledge and experiences with throughout your studies and likeminded friends in the industry after that.

A skype/telephone interview will normally take place to establish that the course suits you, and that you suit the course. Since 2/3 of applications are the result of word of mouth, the university wants to ensure that only people who can make the most of the course are accepted.

Industry experience in the tourism or hospitality sectors is typical, although we accept students with other backgrounds (see below). Recent graduates should gain at least two years experience, as the course has been planned as continuous professional development.

Professionals and students with no tourism experience but knowledge of development studies, business or marketing management, political science, environmental management, sustainability, conservation, geography or other fields that are relevant to tourism are very welcomed to apply. It is often you that eventually makes the most of the course, finding new creative ways to implement responsible tourism.

English as a Foreign Language IELTS 6.0 in all four exams is an essential entry requirement. International candidates using English as their daily working language but no qualifications should enquire about their eligibility to the course.

Preparing for the course is key, and those months before you start should be used by you to become familiar with the literature and also to refresh your professional writing skills. To save you time later on, we recommend that you buy and read all of Harold Goodwin’s book, Taking responsibility for tourism, published in 2011 by Goodfellow.
